Undocumented children to gain Medi-Cal through Covered California

Covered California will be performing an update to their online application that will allow undocumented children to become eligible for full-scope Medi-Cal benefits on May 16, 2016. Children under 19 years of age and whose household income is below 266% of the federal poverty level will not have to verify their immigration status. They will not have to provide proof of citizenship, lawful presence, or proof of immigration status in order to become eligible for Medi-Cal.

Incarceration status and health insurance subsidies

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has released a Frequently Ask Questions documents discussing health insurance subsidies when a person is incarcerated in jail or prison. This includes such situations of a person being arrested but not yet convicted of a crime and those on probation and parole.

New EyeMed Covered California vision insurance plans

Beginning today, visitors to CoveredCA.com can access EyeMed Vision Care via a link, which will take the consumer to EyeMed Vision Care’s website. Once there, consumers will work directly with EyeMed Vision Care to shop for vision benefits and see what coverage options are best for their situation.

Reporting self-employment income to Covered California

Covered California has released guidance on reporting self-employment income. The 2016 Special Enrollment Quick Tips has not only income guidance for self-employed and season workers, but also information about qualifying events for the Special Enrollment Period outside of Open Enrollment and reconciling Advance Premium Tax Credits on the federal tax return.

Covered California mandates consumers be assigned primary care clinicians

Covered California announced Thursday that its board adopted significant new changes to its contracts with health insurers as part of its prescription to take health care reform to the next level. The new contract provisions, which will cover the years 2017-2019, will advance ongoing efforts by health insurance companies, hospitals and care providers to ensure that patients receive quality health care.

Incorrect 1095-A from Blue Shield and Covered California

2016 Income table for Covered California

Covered California has updated their income table for qualifying for either the premium assistance or Medi-Cal. The new income amounts reflect the modest increase to the federal poverty levels (FPL) which is the foundation for premium assistance. The new income amounts only apply to individuals and families who will apply for health insurance through Covered California for 2016. Households who renewed their coverage in 2015 or enrolled during open enrollment for 2016 are not affected by the higher income levels in most situations.

March 10th deadline for Covered California Conditional Eligibility verification

Consumers began to receive a Covered California notice February 2016 as a reminder that they need to provide documents to prove they are eligible to continue their health insurance and/or financial assistance through Covered California. The first round of this conditional eligibility notice was sent to those consumers with a coverage start date of January 1, 2016.
