Anthem Blue Cross split fill drug program to reduce waste

Anthem Blue Cross of California

New specialty pharmacy program reduces medication waste

The rising cost of prescription medications and the number of unused doses that are prescribed at the beginning of treatment is unsettling. That’s because when members are prescribed a medication for the first time, it can be difficult to predict how they will respond to it. If the medicine doesn’t work the way it should, members could be stuck with a lot of pills they can’t use. And then they have to get a new prescription for something else, too. This leads to waste and unnecessary costs to the member.

Split Fill fits the bill
Our pharmacy program now offers Split Fill, a way to fill select specialty prescriptions to help alleviate some of that medication waste and excessive costs, while encouraging medication adherence. [New program only applies to small and large employer groups] Members will be allowed only 15 days per fill during the first 30 days, when starting on a select group of new specialty drugs. Copays are prorated during this time. The Split Fill program only applies to the first month of the drug fill at Accredo Specialty Pharmacy. After that, the prescription is filled as it is written by their doctor.
